Education of a Pondering Mom:
Take Time to Smell the Coffee

The Annals of the extremely diverse, artistic, literary, and musical lifestyle of a Charlotte Mason education-loving family. Our philosophy, even though our children are all grown now, is to allow for time and space in each day to be present for those memorable moments; the ones both on and off the calendar.

"'Stay' is a charming word in a friend's vocabulary." ~Louisa May Alcott

1 Thessalonians 4:9-11

"You yourselves are taught by God to love one another...but we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly...and not be in any need."

Collins on Poetry

While attending a Billy Collins luncheon with The Hubster a couple of years ago, I was happy to learn that he lives and breathes a CM-type philosophy. He wants children and adults to read, enjoy, and be able to connect with poetry. He is upset by poetry classes that make poetry a chore or present it as unreachable and not understandable, and downright dull or torturous.

This poem expresses his feelings on the matter quite well.

Introduction to Poetry

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide
or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,
or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with a rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.
